Travel Considerations
CONSIDERATIONS TO KEEP IN MIND
The key to any successful trip? Good preparation. So when it comes to important PD travel considerations, we’ve considered them all.
APD
If your patients are travelling on APD therapy, there is some important information they need to be aware of.
- In order to travel while on APD therapy, your patients will need a travel ply adapter for their destination country, solution bags, the disposable set, and other disposable products such as the MiniCap disconnect caps, etc.
- Not all destination countries have the same base solutions and ancillaries as we do in the UK.
- In some instances, it may be easier for patients to bring disposable products vs. having them delivered, especially for shorter trips.
- Patients will need to be aware of the solution bag connection differences (spike or luer) between countries. Please see the Spike and Luer Connectivity Guide for more information.
- You may want to consider whether or not back-up CAPD supplies should also be delivered to the patient's destination, in the event of APD cycler issues — Baxter recommend 3 to 5 days of CAPD back-up.
CAPD
If your patients are travelling on CAPD therapy, please take note of the following important information.
- In order to travel while on CAPD therapy, patients will need solution bags and other disposable products such as MiniCap disconnect caps, clamps, etc.
- They must remember to either arrange for or personally bring all of the disposable products needed
- In many instances, it may be easier for patients to bring disposable products vs. having them delivered, especially for shorter trips
PRODUCT CONSIDERATIONS
- Products may look slightly different from country to country; make sure you talk to your patient and provide any additional training they may require before their trip. The product they receive at their trip. The product you receive at your travel destination may have different product code numbers on the box, and depending on their destination, may be in a different language
- It’s important that your patients familiarise themselves with the destination packaging, to make sure they are using the correct product(s)
- In some cases, products that Baxter offers are not available in all countries. It’s possible that patients may be required to bring their own disposable products; your Global Travel Club Specialist will tell you if this applies to your patients. There may also be the option of shipping the product from the UK for an additional charge.
- Baxter will not pick up unused product from a destination, nor will we provide refunds
- The patient is responsible for proper disposal of unused product
DELIVERY CONSIDERATIONS
- Your Global Travel Club Specialist will give you details for each specific situation.
- In some situations, Baxter can only deliver to the local port, and your will be responsible for transporting product from the port to their local accommodations.
- It is recommended that the patient contacts the destination countries consulate to confirm customs procedures in some circumstances.
- Patients must remember to bring dressings and medication supplies with them.
- Be prepared for unexpected expenses.
- For APD patients, it is strongly suggested that they take some CAPD back-up supplies with them.
- In some instances, we will be unable to meet your patients international travel needs. Please contact Baxter early in the patients travel planing and before they finalise their plans to avoid any unexpected surprises.
